K2 HF Transceiver Solar Power

Introduction

Many years ago (approx. 2003) I built the Elecraft K2 HF transceiver. Normally I keep the internal PS-1229 2.9AHr sealed lead acid battery charged with a 12W marine solar panel located in a nearby window. In order to use the transceiver in the field, I purchased a portable 70W solar panel. The panel feeds a DC/DC converter which feeds the K2. Due to a protection series diode in the K2 battery circuit, PWM regulators can’t be used.

Figure 1 shows the solar panel connection. I found the quick connect DC5521 connectors with screw terminals very handy to make the wiring harness.
